If “self-care” has started to sound like one more thing you’re failing at, you’re not alone.
Somewhere along the way, self-care got rebranded into a high-maintenance hobby: 12-step routines, expensive products, perfectly aesthetic mornings… and somehow you’re still stressed.
Here’s a gentler (and way more realistic) take: self-care isn’t something you add. It’s something you return to. It’s the small choices that bring you back into your body, back into your day, back into yourself.
Why “more self-care” can make you feel worse
When you’re already stretched thin, adding a long routine can backfire. Your brain doesn’t register it as soothing—it registers it as another obligation.
Instead of asking, “What else should I do?” try:
- What can I simplify today?
- What would make this moment 5% easier?
- What do I need less of right now?
That’s still self-care. And it counts.
The 3-minute self-care reset (you can do it anywhere)
This is my go-to when life is loud and I’m starting to feel snappy, scattered, or “wired but tired.”
- Drop your shoulders Unclench your jaw. Let your tongue soften.
- Exhale longer than you inhale Inhale through your nose for 4… exhale for 6. Repeat 5 times.
- Name what’s true Quietly say: “I’m safe. I’m here. I can do the next right thing.”
Not dramatic. Not complicated. But it tells your nervous system: we’re okay.
Self-care is nervous system care (in normal-person language)
When you’re stressed, your body isn’t being “too sensitive.” It’s doing its job—protecting you.
The goal isn’t to never feel stress. The goal is to give your body regular signals of safety so it can come back to baseline faster.
Think of it like this:
- Stress is the wave
- Self-care is learning how to surf without wiping out every time
A simple weekly rhythm (for women who don’t have time for perfection)
If you want self-care that actually sticks, build a rhythm that’s small enough to keep.
Here’s a simple template:
- Daily (5–10 minutes): gentle movement + one calming breath practice
- 2–3x/week (20–30 minutes): yoga flow, strength, or a long walk
- 1x/week (30–60 minutes): “reset session” (meal prep, tidy, plan, early bedtime)
- 1x/month: something that fills your cup—massage, nature day, workshop, retreat
The magic isn’t in doing it perfectly. It’s in coming back to it consistently.
Tiny self-care menu (pick 1–2, not all)
Choose what fits your day:
- Drink a full glass of water before coffee
- Eat protein at breakfast (even if it’s simple)
- Step outside for 5 minutes of daylight
- Do 10 slow squats or a 5-minute stretch
- Put your phone in another room for one task
- Say no to one thing you don’t have capacity for
- Go to bed 30 minutes earlier (the most underrated self-care)
The bottom line
Self-care doesn’t need to be glamorous to be effective. It just needs to be doable.
